From bi-plane to double-deck jet ‰ÛÒ Qantas celebrates 100 years
On November 16, 1920, the two World War I veteran pilots Paul McGinness and Hudson Fysh founded Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited, or short: QANTAS. Initially, two Avro 504K biplanes formed the ‰ÛÏfleet‰, mainly being operated on joy rides and charter flights. Qantas started scheduled passenger and mail services in 1922. In 100 years, the airline grew from these humble beginnings with a 105 km/hfast biplane with space for two passengers to the global operation of today with the Airbus A380 as flagship and the capacity to fly almost 500 passengers at a cruising speed of 900 km/h to destinations around the world. To start off the year-long centenary celebrations, Qantas unveiled a special livery on its latest aircraft type. Named after the town of Longreach, headquarters of Qantas from 1921, the Dreamliner sports the various logos used in the company‰۪s history. Adding to the anniversary color scheme, further models in the 1/500 and 1/200 scales from Qantas‰۪ rich history are in development for release in 2020.
