RF-4E Phantom IIs were first delivered to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in late 1974. Designed primarily for tactical reconnaissance missions, RF-4Es were usually unarmed; instead, they featured radar warning receivers and other equipment best suited for recon. Today, the JASDF has a fleet of 71 Phantom II aircraft in its arsenal, many of which are flown by the 501st Squadron, Air Reconnaissance Group.
