Description
This model depicts the first of three ships in a line to bear this name in the French Navy. She distinguished herself under Tourville, who commanded her at the victory at Béveziers on July 10, 1690, and at the Battle of Barfleur on May 29, 1692. This first Soleil Royal was built in Brest in 1669 to the plans of L. Hubac for an original tonnage of 2,000 tons and was armed with 104 cannons. The sculptures that adorned the ship were attributed to Coysevox. Naval historians had thoroughly researched the Soleil Royal: they had all developed their own theories and disagreed. All authentic documents had disappeared. The Heller model stirred great emotions among experts of the time, even though new elements were added. Note: The instructions, also available separately, are included with the model kit and do not need to be purchased additionally.
