The Skyline of Ken and Mary.
The fourth-generation C110 Skyline, affectionately known as the “Kenmeri”, was launched in September 1972, replacing the great C10 series. From launch, its TV commercials starred two young characters, Ken and Mary. Their romantic, human stories became hugely popular across all age groups and eventually a social phenomenon.
The car itself was a major hit, and so was the merchandise made to match. More than 300,000 T-shirts are said to have been sold. The Kenmeri had every element of the Skyline identity:
- Long-nose, short-deck styling
- Four round tail lights
- The “surfing line” body crease
- Horizontal-needle gauges
Total production exceeded 670,000 units, making it the best-selling Skyline of all time. From the mid-1980s, the 4-door Kenmeri became known as the “Yonmeri” (“4-door Kenmeri”), a nickname still used today.
