To obtain a cost-effective replacement for the 411, Volkswagen, which had just acquired Audi in 1965 and NSU in 1969, borrowed a model from the latter company. This model was launched in 1970, instead of starting the development of a completely new sedan from scratch. It was Volkswagen's first front-wheel-drive car. The Volkswagen Passat followed in 1973.
