Description
Hobbymaster - 1/72 German Sd. Kfz. 11, 3 ton Half Track, 21st Panzer Div., Normandy, France 1944
Borgward was tasked to design a 3 ton towing vehicle. The prototype was ready in 1933 but it only had a 72 HP engine and four road-wheels per side. The second prototype wasn’t any better so in 1938 the project was given to Hanomag. The company added two more road-wheels per side, changed the transmission and gave it a 100 HP engine. The demand was so great that 5 more companies were added to the production of the Sd.Kfz.11. Between 1937 and 1945 25,000 vehicles were produced in 5 variants.
The German 21st Panzer Division was an armored unit probably best known for their actions in North Africa between 1941 and 1943. In 1944 with the immanent Allied invasion Erwin Rommel wanted to have enough men and machinery to stop the invasion on the beaches but Hitler placed them too far back to make that possible. On the first day of the invasion the 21st faced British paratroops at Ranville and then moved to stop the British and Canadian forces near Caen. Sustaining heavy losses the 21st began to retreat toward Germany and was almost annihilated in the Falaise Pocket.
