The Bell UH-1 Iroquois is a multi-purpose helicopter developed for the US Army in the 1950s. Nicknamed “Huey” due to its original designation HU-1, the UH-1 became the iconic aircraft of the Vietnam War, where it was first used in numbers as an aerial unit. About 7,000 UH-1s served in Vietnam, being used for supply transport, troop deployment, medical evacuation, and air assault. The Huey’s capacity to carry casualties greatly contributed to the overall reduction of combat mortality rates in the Vietnam War. Medics could begin treatment of the wounded within the aircraft, before arrival at the field hospital.
