The 1998 World Rally Championship started out on a high note for Carlos Sainz, he dominated the Monte Carlo Rally and took home a first place finish. For the rest of the season, he consistently pulled in top-level finishes, but he just couldn't get around Tommi Makinen. Overall, Carlos managed to get second in the standings, finishing a mere two points behind Tommi.
