The F-35 Lightning II, together with the F-22, is a so-called "fifth generation" fighter developed under the auspices of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program administered by America and a consortium of its military allies. The main aim of the program is to develop a single, cost-effective, all-purpose military aircraft equally suited to fighter, fighter-bomber and ground attack combat roles. The F-35 began life as the X-35 design, which beat out its main JSF competitor, the X-32, to move on to the preliminary limited production stage.

The F-35 (B Version) is the STOVL (Short Take Off and Vertical Landing) model of the F-35 series. It is possible to operate in a small space such as a landing ship. The engine nozzle turns and points downward. At the time of short distance take off, turn down at the diagonal bottom and at the time of the vertical landing face down. In Japan, it was deployed for the first time as an overseas base in the US Marine Corps of Iwakuni base in January 2017.
