During the incasions of Poland and France, the Wehrmacht's earlier Sd.Kfz.23a Spahwagens were able to make considerably by the existence of decent road systems in the invaded countries. As future campaigns would not be carried out in such "vehicle friendly" environments, the need was foreseen for Spahwagens capable of more robust performance, and towards this end, Wehrmacht Weapons Department 6 tasked German vehicle manufacturer Bossing-NAG with development of an eight-wheel drive GS chassis with the ARK chassis.
